Dean first tried woodturning in high school shop class, then decided he wanted to take it up again many years later, in 2009. He finally has more time to devote to it since retiring from 40 years working for the power company.  Most of his wood comes from their woodlot, often rescuing a promising log from the firewood pile.  He enjoys searching for interesting patterns within the wood, including figuring, spalting and especially burls, which result in beautiful bowls, boxes, vases and decorative mushrooms. He is a member of The Maine Woodturners and the American Association of Woodturners.
