Tunkables are vintage silverplate tabletop items that Penny Conti finds in antique shops and at auctions, restores to their original luster, and hand-inscribes with whimsical words and phrases appropriate to their use. They have all the grace, charm, and utility of bygone eras, yet are updated by the inscriptions. Typically, she engraves on the blades of the spreaders, the tines of the forks, and the bowls of the spoons rather than on the handles, because this gives them a unique look. Butter spreaders, for example, say 'SPREAD LOVE' or 'SPREAD JOY'. They are a perfect conversation piece that is a bit of art as well as functional.
